Using Adjectives: ExcitING or ExcitED?



What's the difference between excited and exciting


In today's post, we will discuss how to use "ed" and "ing" adjectives (words used to talk about people, places, things, and ideas). 


Let's look at the photo at the top of this page. Choose the best word to complete the sentence below:




Kelly is __________ because she's going to Hawaii tomorrow. 

a) exciting
b) excited

Answer: Kelly is  excited because she's going to Hawaii tomorrow.


Adjectives ending in "ed" are for talking about how people feel about something.



Kelly said her holiday in Hawaii was exciting.



Adjectives with "ing" endings are for expressing opinions about something.


Now, let's try this exercise using "ed" and "ing" words. Use a dictionary for any words you don't know. Use the comments section to answer the questions.

Look at the picture below, and choose the correct word to complete the sentences.




Kelly: Hi, Liz. How was your date with Richard?

Liz: Terrible. It was so  bored/boring. 1

Kelly: Really? What happened?

Liz: We went to a very nice restaurant. The food was good, but, Richard wasn't  
        interested/interesting 2 in talking to me.

Kelly: Why do you say that?

Liz: He kept texting with friends, and checking Facebook. I was really annoyed/annoying 3 with him. 

Kelly: That's surprised/surprising 4. I thought he was an amazed/amazing guy.

Liz: No, he's a very bored/boring 6 man. The date was very disappointed/disappointing 7.  I got frustrated/frustrating 8, so I went home. 


Next, look at the photos, and choose the best word to complete the sentences. You can use the word in bold. You will have to find one "ed" or "ing" word in your dictionary to answer question number 4.
